The Ministry of health have recommended a third dose of Pfizer/BioNtech vaccine for those who are severely immunocompromised. This is to help these patients develop a better immune response to the vaccine. There has to be an 8-week gap between the second and third dose.

A third dose of the vaccine is recommended for the following groups

  1. People with primary or acquired immunodeficiency states at the time of vaccination.
  2. People on immunosuppressive or immunomodulating therapy at the time of vaccination.Egchemotherapy or biologic agents.
  3. People with chronic immune-mediated inflammatory disease who were receiving or had received immunosuppressive therapy prior to vaccination.
  4. People who had received high-dose steroids for any reason in the month before vaccination.

The following link details this recommendation. If you think you qualify then please check the link below and then contact the practice to arrange consent and a prescription for the vaccination. This must be done before you make an appointment for the third dose. The consent form and vaccine script must be presented to the vaccinator before the vaccine can be given.

Please note it will take some time to identify the patients who qualify and we will be contacting patients in the next few weeks. Your specialist may also advise you that you need to have a third dose and, in this case, please ring to make an appointment to discuss.
